Buying Airline Tickets Early

When booking travel via airplane, the most common piece of advice given is to purchase your ticket well in advance.  Buying your airline ticket early is always beneficial.  Although you may be able to get some last minute deals on air fare, the odds are not as good as purchasing early. 

Waiting until the last minute is a bit of a gamble that sometimes pays off but often does not.  However, all airlines have consistent policies regarding online booking.  Even without any special discount fares or promotions, you will get a better price on your airline ticket if you do not wait until the last minute.  Most airlines have a twenty one day limit to where you will get a discount if purchasing twenty one days before travel or earlier.

If you are looking for specials and discounts, you have a much better chance of finding them if booking early.  Also, if you book your travel several months in advance you will get even greater discounts whether booking directly from the airlines or using an online booking service such as Orbitz, Travelocity or Expedia.  The airlines want to be able to book their seats as early as possible so they give added incentives for people who plan, book and pay for their airline tickets as early as possible.  There are also early bird specials that can be found as promotional items in various places.  If you start looking months in advance, you can find plenty of available specials and deals that you can take advantage of. 

Buying airline tickets early also is advantageous because any seasonal rates or increases in air fares will not affect the price you already have locked in.  Often times, things such as increased fuel costs or strikes or even changes in weather can affect immediate airline sales by increasing the prices.  If you already have the airline ticket locked in at a reduced price, you will not have to worry about such issues.  If you are using frequent flier miles in order to book your travel, there are certain restrictions and black out dates that are in effect.  The earlier you start, the more liable you will be to find available free seats during the preferred dates of travel.  This may require some flexibility on departure days and times but the earlier you start, the better able you will be to plan for such things.

Buying an airline ticket early is especially important if you are traveling during peak seasons.  Summer months when people tend to travel are busy as a whole but any holiday will be really difficult to get travel booked.  Because many people use holidays when they are normally off work to travel, there are fewer available tickets.  Also, most holiday flights are much more expensive then during other times.  If there are available seats on holiday flights as the date nears, those prices will tend to increase as opposed to decrease.  Buying airline tickets early is the best way to get your perfect seats as well as a discount on air fare.
