Last Minute Airline Tickets

It is almost always advisable to book travel as early as possible.  This is because you will lock in current rates and will be able to typically get the best possible discounts available.  There are many reasons, however, that a person will need to book their airline travel at the last minute. 

Sometimes a person will not have a confirmation of the exact plans until much closer to the date and time of departure.  Other times there may be an emergency situation such as a death in the family or illness that will require immediate travel without any advance warning.  Purchasing an airline ticket at the last minute can be somewhat of a gamble.  However, that gamble can sometimes pay off with even cheaper airline tickets then if you were to have planned a long way out.

Airlines like to have all their seats filled so they can have a maximum number of people flying on each flight.  If the flight is not full or close to capacity, the airline runs the risk of not making any profit on that particular flight.  In order to reach capacity, sometimes the airline will open up the remaining seats at the last minute at a discounted rate.  This can benefit people who are flying stand by or for those who are taking a risk and trying to purchase an airline ticket at the last minute. 

If it is not an emergency, most people will have a little more flexibility in when they can leave.  This is beneficial because most people will be able to look at different airlines and flight times in order to get the best rate.  Some airlines actually save a certain number of seats on each flight for discount prices on last minute airline tickets.  A consumer who is traveling at the last minute may be lucky enough to get one of these fares and be able to fly at a greatly reduced price than others on the same flight.  The airlines use this as an incentive to fill up the plane so they can have a completely booked flight. 

Last minute airline tickets are not always cheap, though.  Often they can be found only at greatly increased prices.  Unfortunately, this means those who are flying because of an emergency may have no choice but to pay large amounts of money to get on a typically inexpensive flight just to get to their destination on time.  The airlines are here to make money and they have a variety of incentives and tricks to do that.  They balance expensive tickets with inexpensive tickets so they can have full flights and make their money.  The consumer who is a savvy traveler can use this to their advantage and research different methods of purchasing airline tickets.  If the travel is not for emergency purposes and you can fly standby on any airline, you may be able to get an airline ticket that is very inexpensive.  This can be a good choice for college students coming home or anyone on a budget who is flexible with their time and needs a quick getaway.
